Title: An Anticipated Note

Week 11 - 2019
I can't put mind's eye on it exactly - I'm not sure if it's the lamp post and fixture or more the band of sky and negative space crossing diagonally through the frame - that draw my view to the "starburst" just hiding there behind a tree leaf? Together, they work wonderfully.

Sometimes, it's just easier to have your head in the clouds — to dream, wonder, and use your imagination. In those moments, every situation turns into an adventure ...

Week 7 - 2019
A lighthouse along Lake Michigan, just outside Zeeland, MI.
Everything about this image is wrong -
landscape photo but very shallow field of view
no 'light' in the lighthouse,
no Rule of Thirds, no Golden Sprial
horizon is way too low,
seagull is flying out of the frame
half the tree isn't in the frame
part of the light house is missing
implied negative space,
under exposed
- yet somehow it works, and conveys to the viewer the feeling of the moment.

Week 4 - 2019
Title: Isabelle
Back in September, with much warmer temperatures here in southeast Michigan than we're experiencing today, I spent the afternoon capturing some amazing Senior photos of Isabelle. Although post-processing has been completed and her photos delivered for some time now, I've been reluctant to post any of her final images simply because I have had the most difficult time deciding which I feel represent my best work.
Of the photos selected by Isabelle and her Mother, I've narrowed the field down to these three photographs ...
Which one is your favorite?

Week 2 - 2019
This photograph was captured outside South Holland, IL, along East US Highway 6, (I believe) very near the River Oaks Golf Course ...
It had snowed the night before, and while traveling back to Michigan, I kept noticing the very thick snow covering the tree tops and branches.
I had my camera with me, and was able to pull over and capture a few quick images from which this photograph emerged.

Week 1 - 2019
Title: Cowboy Christmas
Back in December, before all of the festivities of the holidays, I was invited to spend a special evening with the Troy High School Bands as they presented their 2018 Christmas Concert. During the performances, I had the opportunity to photograph 'backstage', capture images with amazing vantage points, and that tell both a musical and photographic story.

Post Processing: Adobe Photoshop was used in post-processing of this image.
For over six years D7100 captured the many landscapes, faces, smiles, portraits, and sports action happenings located in and around the Greater Detroit Metropolitan area.
It even captured some remarkable and memorable photographs while traveling in California, Florida, the Grand Cayman Islands, and Mexico.
It worked with its photographer to capture "The Black River Ranch", a Commercial Photo Session, Troy High School Football games from 2014-2017, Troy United Rugby games from 2015 - 2018, and Detroit Dark Angels Women's Football games from 2016 -2018.
It allowed its photographer to complete "PHOTOGRAPHY BASICS AND BEYOND: FROM SMARTPHONE TO DLSR SPECIALIZATION", a 5-part specialization created by Professor Peter Glendinning and Associate Professor Mark Valentine Sullivan at Michigan State University, and the Professional Photography Course at the New York Institute of Photography.
Survived by his partner in life the Nikon D810, D7100 was truly a unique camera and certainly one of the best in its class.
To say that D7100 will be greatly missed is an understatement!
Not every camera has the opportunity to help its photographer pursue their passion and be a part of something bigger than themselves.
Through the attached lens D7100 was able to stop time, capture a moment - a raw emotion, an overwhelming feeling, an inspiring landscape, an unspoken thought - preserve it, give it meaning, bring that moment to life as art and then share it with the world.
In lieu of a memorial service, donations may be made in D7100's name to Kelly R. Williams Photography.

Title: Detroit - Take 2
So I decided to "re-shoot" the photograph for Assignment 6 Part 2 from my NYIP.edu Professional Photographer Course
Submit one photo showing the exterior of a lit-up house, building, or city skyline at night using the techniques you learned earlier in your exposure studies and architectural photography lesson. The building should be clear, sharp, and free of perspective distortion. Dawn or dusk, when the sky still isn’t completely black, is a great time to take this photo.

Title: The Reproduction
Assignment 6 Part 1 from my NYIP.edu Professional Photographer Course
Submit one photo recreated from an ad campaign. This advertisement can be still-life, lifestyle advertising, or fashion. Upload a scan or photo of the original advertisement with your photograph.
Look through consumer magazines or online ads, and select an advertisement containing a product photograph that appeals to you. It should contain items and/or products that are easy for you to obtain. We want you to try to make an exact duplicate of the photograph in the ad. Duplicate the setup and shoot it as best you can. The picture you select should be one you find appealing, and should be simple enough with respect to garment, location, and props for you to reproduce its mood without major expense to you.
Naturally, we don’t expect you to reproduce the exact product—just use something that is similar in general appearance. And if a model is involved, we don’t expect you to duplicate the face and form of the $1,000-an-hour model in the ad. Rather, use this assignment as an opportunity to see how well your expert direction can turn your sister or brother, spouse or girl-next-door into a fashion model. Have fun with this assignment. Use your imagination and ingenuity.

Title: Lighting Strike
Some photographers, those without the high-tech sensors to detect them and release the shutter, spend many days and nights awake trying to capture lighting strikes.
Others, like myself in this case, get lucky and manage to capture a lighting strike sitting in their vehicle, on the top of a parking garage, in a thunderstorm - while shooting hand-held!

Title: Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant
(an excerpt from Anne Tyler)
Everything comes down to time in the end - to the passing of time, to changing. Ever thought of that?
Anything that makes you happy or sad, isn't it all based on minutes going by?
Isn't happiness expecting something time is going to bring you? Isn't sadness wishing time back again?
Even big things - even mourning a death: aren't you really just wishing to have the time back when that person was alive?
Or photos - ever notice old photographs?
How wistful they make you feel?
Long-ago people smiling, a child who would be an old lady now, a cat that died, a flowering plant that's long since withered away and the pot itself broken or misplaced ...
Isn't it just that time for once is stopped that makes you wistful?
If only you could turn it back again, you think.
If only you could change this or that, undo what you have done, if only you could roll the minutes the other way, for once.”

Title: Photographic Reflections
It's official! I held my first ever 'photography class' - live and in the field ...
I met Nicky through my employer, and our conversation inevitably turned to (you guessed it!) - photography.
Turns out Nicky has had a camera since she eight years old, she actually spent a few college summers in New York pursuing her love of photography, but had to put her camera down in lieu of other life challenges.
This tragedy could not continue and had to be remedied!
I encouraged her to grab her gear, and spend an evening with me just walking around and shooting photographs in a local downtown area. And she did. We casually walked up and down streets, looking at lighting, finding interesting scenes and items to shoot, exploring vantage points, and then comparing what we saw versus what we photographed.
WOW! She really has an eye, and some of her compositions were amazing. What's more, at the end of our session, she asked if we could get together again and shoot more photographs?
I'm thinking - Mission Accomplished.
Here's just one photograph I captured which I feel tells the story of the day - Photographic Reflections

Title: Back to Reality
Chapter 3 Assignment 2 for the NYIP.edu Professional Photographer course:
Set up a simple still-life indoors or outdoors on the floor, the ground, or a table. Your subject might be a vase of flowers or a bowl of fruit or any similar grouping of small objects.
Shoot this still-life in 45° sidelight. Outdoors, this can be sunlight. Indoors, you can use a single incandescent bulb or strobe light. A common mistake indoors is to place the still-life so close to the background wall that a harsh shadow is seen outlining it. Rather, position your subject far enough from the background to either eliminate the wall shadow or soften it. You should introduce a fill light using a reflector or fill card.

Day 184 - Jul 3, 2017
Title: Humanism
While the spirit of the Renaissance ultimately took many forms, it was expressed earliest by the intellectual movement called Humanism.
Humanism was initiated by secular men of letters rather than by the scholar-clerics who had dominated medieval intellectual life and had developed the Scholastic philosophy.
Humanism began and achieved fruition first in Italy, and while its predecessors were men like Dante and Petrarch, its chief protagonists included Gianozzo Manetti, Leonardo Bruni, Marsilio Ficino, Giovanni Pico della Mirandola, Lorenzo Valla, and Coluccio Salutati.
The fall of Constantinople in 1453 provided humanism with a major boost, for many eastern scholars fled to Italy, bringing with them important books and manuscripts and a tradition of Greek scholarship.
Humanism had several significant features:
First, it took human nature in all of its various manifestations and achievements as its subject.
Second, it stressed the unity and compatibility of the truth found in all philosophical and theological schools and systems, a doctrine known as syncretism.
Third, it emphasized the dignity of man. In place of the medieval ideal of a life of penance as the highest and noblest form of human activity, the humanists looked to the struggle of creation and the attempt to exert mastery over nature. Finally, humanism looked forward to a rebirth of a lost human spirit and wisdom. In the course of striving to recover it, however, the humanists assisted in the consolidation of a new spiritual and intellectual outlook and in the development of a new body of knowledge.
The effect of humanism was to help men break free from the mental strictures imposed by religious orthodoxy, to inspire free inquiry and criticism, and to inspire a new confidence in the possibilities of human thought and creations.

A bit of symmetry, numerous leading lines, multiple textures, an "S" shape, a reflection, along with multiple lighting sources - to name a few. And to think, I captured this photo while just walking out and about in my neighborhood?
Proof to the phrase that the best camera, is the camera you have with you!

Title: Order In
A classic photographic technique and one of my all-time favorites is to naturally frame your subject. And yet just framing the subject 'alone' would not tell the story captured in this photograph - a story that is conveyed by the red and blue neon PIZZA sign, and the beverage cooler along with the classic white pizza boxes located to the right of the frame.
Photography instructors will tell you to be careful with 'white' of 'hot' spots within your composition, as they will steal the viewers eye away from the other elements in the photograph. But in this case, I think the 'white' pizza boxes enhance the photograph and help lead the viewer's eye in to the photograph.
Can you determine the other photographic technique largely at play?
If you guessed positive versus negative space, you were correct!

Title: Cloudy Snowfall
I love photographs like this one - a photo that gives it's viewer's eye a different composition, a scene that actually changes the more the viewer takes it all in, a frame that makes the viewer ask: "Am I looking up toward clouds"? "Am I looking down from above clouds"? "Could I be looking through clouds and down upon a landscape, a cloudy snowfall"?

Title: Model Clare K.
Photographed Model Clare K. on May 20, 2017, in the early morning hours, located on-site in downtown Detroit. Clare wanted to shoot one of the locations in an area that had some graffiti as a backdrop, and as I had scouted a few areas prior to the shoot, I thought this location would work nicely. I quickly set up my gear, had Clare pose, and we just started shooting.
It's been just short of a month since then, and I'm just finishing post-processing her photographs. This is one of my favorite photographs captured from the session.

I had the honor of working with Kate and Tanner and shooting their engagement photographs.
With Tanner's very busy schedule, I received a call that morning to say that Tanner was flying into to town for the afternoon, and I was asked if it would be possible to put together the photo session on such a short notice. Michigan, mid-afternoon, not a cloud in the sky, ... sure no problem!

Title: Unwavering Love
Following the theme of 'decisive moments', this adorable photograph captures two very different perspectives.
On the left we have DDA #54's Greatest Fan, holding a home-made sign supporting her favorite player.
On the right we have DDA #54's Greatest Defender, ready to leap over the railing and rush the field to protect his favorite player.
How special it must be to experience such 'unwavering love'.

Day 149 - May 29, 2017
Title: Role Model
Simply stated, the goal of every photograph should be to 'tell a story' - to capture 'the decisive moment'.
Some photographs, like this shot of Kate - Detroit Dark Angels' #20 - do that and more. Here the viewer is quickly led to see that Kate has caught the ball, and is now stepping forward to face the defenders (we assume) that are quickly approaching.
And then subtlely the viewers eye moves from Kate to the little girl standing on the sideline, her arms raised as if she had just made the catch herself.
It's precisely then, in that decisive moment, Kate became so much more than just a woman, or a football player, or a kick returner - she became a 'Role Model', and never even knew it.

Title: Reflections
In the article "20 photography composition tips that will get you beautiful photos", Helen Hooker points out that the golden ratio or spiral - defined by Leonardo Fibonacci in the 13th century as a proportion to which many beautiful things in the world, natural and man-made, adhere - can oftentimes be found in photographic works.
From a compositional perspective, and the tips found in Helen's article, the photograph below uses the following:
Tip #2: Shoot from a different point of view, namely from the use of a 'reflection'
Tip #3: Contrast as a compositional tool, capturing the photo in black and white
Tip #9: Does your photo have a Focal Point? Here the focal point is the surface of the glass which provides the reflection, and is enhanced by the shallow Depth of Field, creating a nice 'bokeh' effect in the background, and
Tip #19: The Golden Spiral - which follows the model's hairline in the left of the frame, flows across and through the frame, spirals outward toward the viewer, and ends at center of the left eye of the model in the right of the frame.
This photograph of models: Clare K and Maeve B. was captured with a Nikon D810 Full Frame camera and a AF-S Nikkor 70-200mm F/2.8 GII ED lens (both are my favorites for so many reasons). The photograph was captured in Black and White by using a custom profile uploaded and saved as a picture control, and selected using the 'Manage Picture Control' under the 'Shooting Menu" of the Nikon D810. The photograph was captured RAW and JPG, at a focal length of 85mm, iso-200, f/5, at 1/15 sec with no flash.
The RAW photograph was then post-processed in Adobe Photoshop CC 2015 to 'crop' the photograph and create a 3:2 format picture and the Golden Spiral, as shown:
The photograph was then exported from Photoshop as a JPG.
I hope you enjoyed this blog post, find Helen's tips useful, are able to try them in your future compositional techniques, and that you can use the steps outlined above to create your own "Golden Spiral" photographs.

Title: Sideline Support!
OK, I have to preface this post by stating that it will be completely biased, as Emilie Hallé (https://www.facebook.com/EmilieHalle) is one of my all-time favorite - girls, ballers, teammates, and people. She's fast, funny, witty, intelligent, a fierce competitor - all in a 5 foot 7 inch frame - and yet she has this soft and caring demeanor that just steals your heart.
Here, she is sidelined with a compound break in her lower left leg, and yet she's still unstoppable ...

I had the opportunity to capture some special moments and awesome photos of Alle over the 2017 Dark Angel's Season.
I can't put my finger on it exactly - maybe it's an expression of her determination, a small glimpse into the fierce competitor she is, or an instantaneous glance into the soul of the women behind the eyes - but in every picture I've managed to capture of her, the Eyes Behind The Mask have been simply stunning.

Title: Mother's Day 2017
We celebrate Mother's Day to honor our mothers and also to celebrate motherhood, motherly bond and the inspiration of moms in society.
Mother's day is celebrated all over the world on various days, yet most commonly in March, April, or May.
The place that a mother holds in a child's heart is same all around the world.
A mother is like a guiding star, without whose guidance a child will be lost.
'Mom', 'Maa', 'Mae', or 'Haha', the words might be different in different languages but they signify the same everywhere - unconditional care, love, concern and sacrifice. And Mother's Day is the day to let your Mom know how special she is to you ...
Happy Mother's Day!

Title: An Abstract Kick
While shooting Sports Action, I have taking many photographs of the kick - football kick-off, football punt, football point-after kick, rugby penalty kick, rugby drop-kick, rugby point-after kick and rugby kick-out-of-bounds.
Most turn out to be a very nice photograph that I'm generally pleased with.
But every once in awhile, I find I capture a photograph, much like this one, that just seems to tell a much different story.

Title: Calm before the Storm
I love shooting Sports Action with the Nikon D7100 and AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II. The AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II is simply an amazing lens, fast, and produces insane bokeh.
In this shot taken at 'The Half', Troy United Rugby's Abraham Ali Jan is clearly deep in thought while listening to words of advice from his coaches.

For the past several years, each Spring, I have had the honor to photograph the Detroit Dark Angel's Women's Football Team.
A newcomer to the team but not to the Game, Andrea has made her presence known on and off the field. Not only is she a skills player, playing Corner and Wide Receiver, she is fiercely supportive of her team mates.

Title: Flashback!
When I was kid, most Sundays I watched the Pittsburgh Steelers' Terry Bradshaw step back, let the ball fly, and like a Tomahawk missile it would find it's target, landing in the waiting hands of the end-zone bound Lynne Swann.
Yesterday, I experienced the same sense of amazement at the Women's Football Alliance Game, in which the Detroit Dark Angels Women's Football team battled the Pittsburgh Passion.
The Pittsburgh Passion's #14 Lisa Horton, looks over her shoulder, the ball lands in her waiting hands as she's end-zone bound.

A quiet nook I found while exploring downtown Rochester, MI. As I passed by it the first time, the lamp post caught my eye.

Title: Got Paczki?
Unless you grew up in and around Detroit, MI, or are from Poland, you probably have never heard of one of the most delicious, stuffed to the maximum, yummiest tasting, covered in powdered sugar desserts created - The Paczki!
According to Wikipedia, "Pączki are deep-fried pieces of dough shaped into flattened spheres and filled with confiture or other sweet filling. Pączki are usually covered with powdered sugar, icing, glaze or bits of dried orange zest. A small amount of grain alcohol (traditionally, Spiritus) is added to the dough before cooking; as it evaporates, it prevents the absorption of oil deep into the dough. The common opinion is that the ideal pączek is fluffy and at the same time a bit collapsed, with a bright stripe around – it is supposed to guarantee that the dough was fried in fresh oil.
In North America, particularly the large Polish communities of Detroit, ... Paczki Day is celebrated annually by immigrants and locals alike. The date of this observance merges with that of pre-Lenten traditions of other immigrants on Fat Tuesday", the day before Ash Wednesday.

Title: The Giving Tree
And after a long time the boy came back again.
"I am sorry, Boy," said the tree, "but I have nothing left to give you-
My apples are gone."
"My teeth are too weak for apples," said the boy.
"My branches are gone," said the tree.
"You cannot swing on them-"
"I am too old to swing on branches," said the boy.
"My trunk is gone," said the tree.
"You cannot climb-"
"I am too tired to climb," said the boy.
"I am sorry," sighed the tree.
"I wish that I could give you something... but I have nothing left. I am an old stump. I am sorry..."
"I don't need very much now," said the boy, "just a quiet pleace to sit and rest. I am very tired."
"Well," said the tree, straightening herself up as much as she could,
"well, an old stump is a good for sitting and resting. Come, Boy, sit down. Sit down and rest."
And the boy did.
And the tree was happy.

Title: Steps to Nowhere
Returned to the local school playground, and captured this view of the play structure steps. I think what I find most intriquing and yet completely unexpected about this photograph is the 'frame within a frame' and that we really have two photos in one: the picture of the steps within the triangle created by the yellow piping, and then the picture of the tree off in the distance, framed by a smaller triangle. And yes, that is actually small pieces of hail falling from the sky.

Day 65 - March 6, 2017
Title: Reflections from Firefighters Park
Every once in awhile, a composition presents itself in such a way that it's almost impossible not to take a great photograph.
In this photograph, the overcast sky and evening lighting give the photograph a softness, completely free of shadows, while the stillness of the water provides an almost perfection reflection, combined with a fog in the background, created by the cool evening air, giving the photo the feel of a shallow depth of field.

The view of a small city airport runway at night with all of it's lights on. Contrary to what you see in the photograph, I was standing in about eighteen inches of piled snow, and actually shot this photograph through chain-link fencing. The Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-70mm f/2.8G ED just produces some amazing starbursts.

This photo contains many textures and even more patterns, that take the viewer's eye on a journey throughout the photograph.

When I was just a kid, many Saturdays would find me with my Dad, at the local sports car repair shop, checking out the exotic cars, watching the mechanics that repaired them, and hearing the engines roared when the cars were started!
It's no wonder I often find myself at the local sports car dealership, checking out the exotic cars, remembering Saturdays spent with Dad, the mechanics that repaired them, and how the the engines roared when the cars were started.

Title: Just Down the Path
As I mentioned in an earlier post, 'leading lines' can not only help enhance the DOF effect, they can lead the viewer's eye into and through the photo.
In this photo the entire composition directs the viewer's eye through the photograph and out of view, leaving the viewer to wonder and speculate what might be waiting just down the path.

Title: How Many Ways Can The Road End?
Again, out driving around the neighborhood as I often do when trying to find things to photograph, when the idea for this quick series of photographs came to me.
I'm sure we've all experienced a time in our lives when no matter which road we traveled down, each seemed to be a road that ends.
As with many of life's roads, if you look just past the 'Road Ends' sign, you can sometimes see a different road to take, a place to explore, or perhaps someone that has been traveling their own road waiting to find you.

Title: A bridge to Somewhere
As I was driving, out of the corner of my eye, in the window display of a local lighting store - I spotted this painting.
I know nothing about this painting, where's it's from, who painted it, if it's expressive, or documentative, what experiences brought the artist to create it - only that it was there in that moment, and it called to me to photograph it.
Now, I share it on a much larger stage and with you.

Title: Hot Toddie - My Version
As Nancy Mitchell points out in her Seven Days, Seven Hot Toddies project "when the temperature dips, there's nothing like a hot toddy to lift your spirits and warm your insides". She goes on to state that some people believe Hot Toddies have medicinal properties, and that's precisely how we've arrived at this moment. I've been battling a severe head cold for past few days, and in Nancy's project, she not only mixes it up, but she gives seven great tasting recipes for Hot Toddies - one for each day of the week! Stop over and peruse Nancy's project or try My Version:
My Hot Toddy
1 tablespoon honey
1 cinnamon stick (optional)
1 1/2 ounce Jameson's Irish Whiskey
3/4-1 cup boiling water
1 large slice of lemon
Note: Serves 1. Add honey and cinnamon stick to the bottom of a heat-proof snifter or mug. Add the boiling water and then the Jameson's Irish Whiskey. Squeeze the lemon, drop it in the cup, and stir until the honey is melted. Sip slowly and enjoy.

Title: Reflections - A Round Town
I had a good friend ask if this was a photo of marbles? Well Dawn, I guess you could say it is, and a photo of some really big marbles!
Although it's older and completely manual, I think the Nikkor AI-S 105mm f/2.5 is just an amazing lens, has incredible bokeh, and although this picture contains mostly black and white compositional elements, the colors it produces are always warm and vibrant.
What's more, I feel that when using it, or a lens of this type, it really forces me to focus more, submerse myself into the moment, and results in some of my better work.

Title: Trying to See Through the Fog
In trying to keep up with taking a picture every day, I have also been trying to make stopping by the park part of my daily routine.
This evening, I was able to capture this photograph as the fog was forming over the lake, while experimenting with an older simple Point and Shoot Olympus FE-340 8.0 Megapixel Digital Camera. I really like the surreal effect of the composition, almost as if the fog is moving.

Title: Fallen Angel
Had the opportunity to return to the dance studio and capture a few more photographs of the Dress Rehearsal.
I can't put my finger on exactly what it is about this photograph - sure the highlights are hot, the focus could be sharper, and some would say there is too much negative space - but I feel it may be the composition that intrigues me. Her arms lead your view in to the frame and downward, gradually along with the light, subtly arriving on her face, and there it is - the simple contrast of her red lip stick against the bokeh'd dark backdrop giving way to an emotionless expression.

Title: ... Blowin' in the Wind
How many roads must a man walk down
Before you call him a man?
How many seas must a white dove sail
Before she sleeps in the sand?
Yes, and how many times must the cannon balls fly
Before they're forever banned?
The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind
The answer is blowin' in the wind
Yes, and how many years can a mountain exist
Before it's washed to the sea?
Yes, and how many years can some people exist
Before they're allowed to be free?
Yes, and how many times can a man turn his head
And pretend that he just doesn't see?
The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind
The answer is blowin' in the wind
Yes, and how many times must a man look up
Before he can see the sky?
Yes, and how many ears must one man have
Before he can hear people cry?
Yes, and how many deaths will it take 'till he knows
That too many people have died?
The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind
The answer is blowin' in the wind

Title: "Cloudy"
Cloudy
The sky is gray and white and cloudy,
Sometimes I think it's hanging down on me.
And it's a hitchhike a hundred miles.
I'm a rag-a-muffin child.
Pointed finger-painted smile.
I left my shadow waiting down the road for me a while.
Cloudy
My thoughts are scattered and they're cloudy,
They have no borders, no boundaries.
They echo and they swell
From Tolstoy to Tinker Bell.
Down from Berkeley to Carmel.
Got some pictures in my pocket and a lot of time to kill.
Hey sunshine
I haven't seen you in a long time.
Why don't you show your face and bend my mind?
These clouds stick to the sky
Like floating questions, why?
And they linger there to die.
They don't know where they are going, and, my friend, neither do I.
Cloudy,
Cloudy.

Title: Dancing with The Moment
I had the opportunity to photograph some performances from a local dance studio Dress Rehearsal.
To be completely honest, the changing and extremely low lighting conditions made this shoot quite challenging. Even while shooting the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II wide open, with the camera hand-held in Aperture Priority mode, I had to let the Auto ISO adjust quite high. Yet, this photograph is simply stunning, and I think the graininess softens the image to some degree.

Somewhere in the middle of the I-696/I-275/I-96 interchange, while in the midst of the almost never ending stop and go, bumper-to-bumper traffic, I ran into this magnificent creature, who contrary to it's owner and the rest of us, is actually enjoying the ride!

"... and on the drums, Mr. Larry Grodsky"!
I was honored to have the opportunity to capture a few shots of the band "Chris Richards and the Subtractions" playing at a local venue. Of the photos I shot in the series, this one stood out to me most as it captures the subject's face in detail and stationary; yet it simultaneously captures his arms, his hand holding the drum stick, all in motion. It's almost as if it's two pictures in one.

Title: Golden Stallion
This magnificent beast comes to you all the way from Mexico, a treasured souvenir and just one of the many memories from our 2013 Spring Break Cruise. What an amazing and fun-filled time we had with our Spring Break travel companions - Lisa, Gabriella, and Libby. On our last shore excursion of the cruise, while browsing through some of the local shops and boutiques, my son stumbled upon this piece of metal art work and well, the rest is history.
With the temperatures outdoors hovering around 15 degrees Fahrenheit, I decided to shoot today's photograph indoors. I draped a black drop cloth over a table, allowing it to flow down and on to the floor, placed a framed mirror diagonally on the cloth, and then centered the metal art work on the mirror. I mounted a G2 Low-Profile Triple Action Ball Head from Benro on to a Platypod Pro Max mini tripod, attached the Nikon D810 and Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-70mm F2.8G ED to the Ball Head, and now I was ready to capture the perfect shot for Day 6 of my Project 365. I checked the camera settings, enabled the pop-up flash, focused the lens, and took the first shot.
Uuhhh ... simply put, it looked nothing like what I envisioned.
I tried different angles, a number of different settings, and still was not getting the look I wanted. Then I thought "What about using an off-camera flash"? I was able to create a very interesting effect by back-lighting the art work, but when I placed the flash off to the right of the subject, I knew I was close. By using two off-camera flash units, one placed to the left and right of the subject, I was able to capture this shot of the Golden Stallion.

The Droste effect (Dutch pronunciation: [drɔstə])—known as 'mise en abyme' in art—is the effect of a picture appearing within itself, in a place where a similar picture would realistically be expected to appear. The appearance is recursive: the smaller version contains an even smaller version of the picture, and so on. Only in theory could this go on forever; practically, it continues only as long as the resolution of the picture allows, which is relatively short, since each iteration geometrically reduces the picture's size. ["Droste Effect." Wikipedia. Wikimedia Foundation, n.d. Web. 06 Jan. 2017. <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Droste_effect>]
In this photograph, I took the effect even further by capturing a photo of the actual page of the blog displaying the photo ...
Tom Beddard, who's interests focus in computer graphics, information virtualization and interactive experiences, takes Escher's Droste Effect to an entirely different level. Feel free to view some of Tom's creative works at his website.

Day 4 - January 4, 2017
Title: Up All Night (at Children's Hospital of Michigan)
Lately, here in the suburbs of Metropolitan Detroit, the temperatures outdoors have been below fre-e-e-zing and it's been quite windy. Despite Old Man Winter, I decided to brave the elements and photograph what I feel is one of the most architecturally interesting and colorful buildings I've ever seen - The Children's Hospital of Michigan in Troy, MI.
I felt the Christmas lights in the trees added to the composition, and lead the viewer's eye into the frame from the bottom left.
And there in the center of the frame is the single tree, alone, at night wishing it had lights of it's own on it's branches to sparkle.
It's there in that instant, I hope the viewer looks up into the windows of the hospital and thinks of the many children spending tonight, like the tree feeling alone, wishing they had a healthy life of their own so they too could sparkle.

Day 3 - January 3, 2017
Title: Parking Exit
Sometimes there's just something about a location that calls out "Photograph Me!". This is exactly what I heard as I was driving past this parking garage, and boy am I glad I listened.
I spent a few minutes scouting the scene, looking for what I felt would result in an interesting composition, and finalized on this perspective and vantage point. I quickly set up my tripod, and using the ceiling tiles as markers, I placed it directly in the center of the isle. I attached my camera, checked my settings, and clicked.
I pressed the review/play-back button to view my new treasure and it happened - that moment we all have experienced when the picture we just captured looks nothing like the image we saw with our eyes! What my eyes saw was not only orthographic symmetry created from the cement pillars, but the symmetry created between the ceiling surface and the surface of the parking garage floor. And although the first picture I captured did express the orthographic symmetry created from the cement pillars because I was centered in the isle, my camera was not centered vertically between the ceiling surface and the surface of the parking garage floor. I adjusted my tripod raising my camera as high as possible (I'm only 5'6" tall) and captured the photo you see below.
Then when I was reviewing the photo for this post, I thought "I wonder how this would look if the photo were rotated 180 degrees"?
And I just can't decide . Which do you like better?

Day 2 - January 2, 2017
Title: Frozen Sunburst
I spent the afternoon exploring Fire Fighters Park, Troy, MI, and managed to capture this photo just as the sun set over the lake, in between two homes. The idea of trying to capture a 'sun burst' came to me at the last moment, I set the Aperture to f/22, and let the camera do the rest. This was actually the best of the 10 sun burst photos I took during that moment. This brings up a good point - which is to be sure to take multiple photos in a setting where the lighting conditions are changing quickly.

Day 1 - January 1, 2017
Title: Is it live or is it a Robert Gohl Decoy?
I actually photographed this Wood Duck on December 31, 2016, in the Rochester Municipal Park, Rochester, MI, while I was capturing photos of male and female Mallard Ducks for my good friend Mr. Robert Gohl - an avid hunter and insanely talented decoy artist!
Bob told me it's really rare to see this type of duck at this time of year. Honestly, I couldn't miss this duck. His coloring and markings were so vibrant he literally stood out among all of the other ducks.

What Is A Project 365?
A Project 365 is a photography project, in which you take one photograph every day for a year, on any subject of your choosing and share it with the world.
One Photo A Day
That's simply the idea behind it! Just capture and upload one photo a day, along with comments or the story behind the picture, and share it with the world.
This helps you keep a journal of your life and remember the little day-to-day things that make life so valuable.
(We’re all human, so if you can’t take a photo on an exact day, it’s OK. You can always backdate a photo)
What's All The Fuss?
Recently there has been a great deal of hype about 365 Projects, and everyone seems to be doing one, each with their own individual take on the concept. Some people take photos of themselves, others take photos of just one object, some take photos of their daily meals and others, like me, will just take photos of everyday life.
Why do it?
Taking a photo each day can be a huge undertaking; however the payoffs and the sense of achievement at the completion of the project are more than worth it.
Taking photos every day will improve your photography skills, teach you about lighting, composition and creativity. It also forces you to come up with new ideas, new techniques, and makes you look at life a little differently and from one of my favorite perspectives – through the lens.
The number one reason for me to undertake My 365 Project is that it will not only be a visual diary of my life for the next year, but it will be part of a bigger composition – My Blog, which I’ve named My Digital Pulse.
I'm Not Very Good / My Camera Is Old
It's not about being 'good' or having the ‘best equipment’, it's about remembering the little things in life. Some people just use their iPhone to take pictures, and it doesn't matter. Jump in and have fun!
Motivation
Sometimes you'll feel like there is nothing to take a photo of, or that nothing exciting is happening. When days like this come around, and believe me they will come, you just have to pick yourself up and force yourself out of the house, find a scene, and just start taking pictures.
Also, telling your friends and colleagues about your project will keep you engaged, people might even start asking if they can be in your pictures or what you’re going to take a picture of today.
All of this will encourage you and be a constant reminder for you to take better photos!
Getting Started
Here are 4 rules to remember on your journey:
I'd love to hear why you started your Project 365 in the comments.
